Foreword from the President

As president of the Academia Europaea it is an honour to address each of you, as you take the time to peruse this sketch of the Academia Europaea. Our academy was founded in 1988 in Cambridge, England and has flourished in the intervening decades. It was founded in a time of great optimism and ambition for Europe. Today we uphold those attitudes and in 2028 we will celebrate the role and contributions of this, our unique constellation of the voices and opinions of Europeʼs leading scholars upon the occasion of its 40th anniversary.
The Directory of the Academy lists the membership by Section and by Country. The Academy continues to grow, year-on-year, and is rapidly approaching 6000 members. Its 24 Sections cover the broad expanse of European learning and expertise. The Academy and its organisation are fluid entities which adapt continually to the circumstances of the time. Amongst other organisational adjustments we can especially note the recent creation of the Section of Engineering in the Class of Exact Sciences (Class B).
The Academia Europaea also took the major step of establishing its legal presence in Germany and its new headquarters in Munich. Together with continuing support from our team at the London office, we are in a better position than before to cope with the challenges of optimising the experiences of members and rising to the opportunities provided for example by consultative calls of the European Commission. Nevertheless, one of the greatest current strengths of the Academy is its full operational independence from any governmental funding. This independence is highly valued by those seeking our opinion.
The hubs of the Academia Europaea are the distributed heart of the smooth yet impactful functioning of the Academy. To our illustrious list of the existing hubs and data centre at Bergen, Barcelona, Budapest, Graz, Tbilisi and Wroclaw we can now be pleased to welcome the addition of Bucharest. To all of the hub staff and directors go our deepest respect, appreciation and thanks for their contributions to the building of the Academia Europaea.
The Academia is keeping abreast of the most recent developments in the academic landscape in Europe and indeed across the globe. As we enter uncharted waters in the relationship between politics and research funding in many countries the Academia Europaea will always aim to serve as a voice for the academic community itself in the decision-making processes surrounding its activities and the advancement of learning as a fundamental element of our shared culture.
I wish you inspiration as you browse the contents of this directory.

D.B. Dingwell, May 2026.
